I commend you Dr Bowman for looking at Housing as a Public Trust.
Looking back at 9 years of the rezoning process with the City of Fairfax VA.
Here are two things I purpose the Towns, Cities, Counties, and the State of Va do.
1. The Establishment of a Affordable Housing Fund to offset the construction of Affordable Housing units and lowering of the rent or monthly mortgage payments.
2. The reduction of the amount of time needed to rezone property to build affordable housing units.
Virginia could become a model for the rest of the nation.
As a member of the Glebview Affordable Housing Team at Fairfax Presbyterian Church in Fairfax VA I truly believe Housing is both a Public and Private Trust. Public/Public partnerships are the way to go. We as a Church are building 10 Affordable Townhouse Units on the property of the church. We have been able to lease land on the 9.50 acres of property owned by the National Capital Presbytery of Washington DC for 99 years.
After 9 years of negotiations with the Planning Commission and City Council of the City of Fairfax Virginia over the rezoning of the land we going to start digging the foundations of those townhouse Units at the end of October.
The project is a partnership between Fairfax Presbyterian Church, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Va, Homestretch, an organization that offers transitional housing for the Homeless and the Homebuilders Association of Fairfax.
Two of the units will be known as Scared Homes, a partnership between Fairfax Presbyterian and Homestretch to deal with the issue of Homelessness in our community. The construction will be through Habitat and most of the construction materials will come from the Fairfax Homebuilders Association.
@johnwilliams, thank you for your engagement. Clearly you and the Fairfax Presbytarian Church are engaged in providing affordable homes to the public. For that, I salute you. As the project progresses, I encourage you to stay engaged with Public Agenda so we can collaborate in raising awareness around this effort with hopes of helping ten families finding a safe place to call home.
Teachers, Firefighters, Policemen, etc need to live in the communities they serve. They can’t because they cannot afford to live there.
